Balmoral Show 2014: Pig Interbreed championship

The Glenmarshal herd of Trevor Shields, Kilkeel, Co Down, swept the board in the pig ring, claiming both the championship and reserve titles.

Winning the silverware was their junior Large White breed champion boar Glenmarshal Rope 55 sired by Glenmarshal Rope 55.

In reserve was Mr Shields’ Landrace boar Glenmarshal Notis 3728, who had taken the breed championship earlier in the day. Born in September 2013 he is a son of Glenmarshal Notis.

Judge William Gregory, who keeps 25 Large White and British Lop sows at his home on Yorkshire, said the champion simply stood out.

“It was only eight-months-old and the size and depth of him was fantastic. He had good ham, walked well and had a nice clean front.”

Commenting on his reserve pickings Mr Gregory added: “He could’ve done with a bit more ham. [He was] a little bit short and not the quality of the champion by a long way.”
