New rules for Scotch beef on way

NEW RULES governing the status of Scotch beef will come into force on Jul 21.

The new regulations, which will ensure that any beef sold as Scotch must come from cattle born, reared and slaughtered in Scotland, were finally published in the EU‘s official journal on Jul 1.

Under EU rules, Scotch beef‘s new Protected Geographic Indicator (PGI) status takes effect three weeks after that publication date.

NFU Scotland president John Kinnaird welcomed the news and said Scotch beef was a world leader.

“The PGI definition reinforces the brand and sends a clear signal to consumers that they are sourcing high quality produce from a guaranteed standard of production,” he said.
