RW 2010: Minister pledges to fight on against bovine TB in Wales
Wales’ rural affairs minister Elin Jones has pledged to fight on against bovine TB despite the High Court’s ruling against a badger cull.
Ms Jones said she was determined to “eradicate, not simply manage” bovine tuberculosis in Wales.
Speaking on the first morning of the Royal Welsh Show at Builth Wells, Powys, Ms Jones said: “Last week’s judgement was obviously disappointing to beef and dairy farmers throughout Wales.
“My message is: Do not be disheartened. We will not give up. Yes, this is a setback and a hurdle which must be overcome, but my commitment to eradicate this animal disease is as strong as it was in 2007 when we were required to tackle foot-and-mouth disease.”
Ms Jones said time was needed to consider the High Court’s judgement carefully and reflect, but finished her speech to applause, telling farmers: “Watch this space.”
