Champion beast at Abergavenny Fatstock sells for £3,150
Winning Abergavenny’s annual primestock show andsale for the fifth consecutive year was Andrew and Merril Pritchard and Sons,from Longtown with their 17-month-old Limousin steer Basil Brush, which tipped the scales at 590kg.
Following on from their success at the Welsh Winter Fair a week previously, where the Basil was placed second in his class, the Pritchard family topped the market selling to Messrs N S James and SonButchers, Raglan, for £3,150 (533p/kg).
Judges Doug Willis, of Douglas Willis butchers,Cwmbran and Huw Beavan, of Beavan Family Butchers, Abergavenny, awarded thereserve rosette to Mr I Pugh, St Weonards, with his Limousin cross heiferweighing in at 580kg.
She sold to Beavan Family Butchers for £2,030(350p/kg).
The sheep classes were very well supported and attracted a superb qualityentry. Judge Terry Bayliss, chairman of Farmers Fresh, Kenilworth, awardedthe overall championship to Chris Ball, Brynderi, with his pen of five Texellambs weighing 40.2kgs each. They were purchased by the Judge for Farmers Freshat £175/head (£4.35/kg).
The reserve champion pen of lambs came from D Mantle, Llangynidr, and also soldto Mr Baylis for £70/head, weighing 36.5kg.
