Vaccinate to protect against leptospirosis
More than 79% of unvaccinated cattle show exposure to bovine leptospirosis, according to the latest data released from the Bovine Leptospirosis Information and Screening Service.
The results come from bulk milk samples from more than 700 unvaccinated dairy herds across England and Wales and blood samples from about 200 beef herds. Results show 80% of dairy herds and 73% of suckler herds are exposed to leptospirosis causing bacteria.
Schering-Plough Animal Health vet adviser Paul Williams says herds most at risk are those that buy stock in, use a bull and not AI, those co-grazing with sheep or near water courses. “Unless you operate a truly closed herd talk to your vet about testing and vaccination.”
He adds that the disease causes poor fertility, with low conception rates, severe milk drop and abortions.
