Feed prices pushing turkeys higher
The impact of the global wheat situation was the main topic for discussion at the annual NFU Cymru autumn turkey marketing meeting which was held in Carmarthenshire.
“Wheat and protein prices contribute to approximately 60% of the total cost of production for egg and poultry meat producers and the current feed prices are simply eroding their profits,” NFU poultry advisor Kelly Watson told the meeting.
“According to a recent NFU survey, feed prices alone have increased by 20% this year and the markets remain extremely volatile with little sign of stabilising. Whilst feed is the predominant factor in the cost of poultry production, other factors such as labour, packaging and energy costs have also increased this year.”
Delegates were also given guidance on how to market their turkeys effectively for this year’s festive season in order to remain competitive against the major retailers.
“It is time we championed what we produce and we therefore have to market our end products more effectively,” said Tony Burgess, NFU Cymru poultry group chairman. “Our poultry products are reared on traditional local farms where achieving high levels of animal health and welfare standards is extremely important.
“As Christmas approaches, I really encourage the general public to buy Welsh turkeys from local farms to support producers throughout the whole of Wales.”
Any NFU Cymru member wishing to advertise local produce can do so by contacting the NFU Cymru office on 01982 554200 and they will feature under the Welsh local producers section of the NFU online website.
