Meat initiative sells

2350 lambs

By Mike Stones

A LEADING meat initiative has sold nearly 2350 British lambs, generating more than £5000 for the farming charity ARC-Addington Fund. Mike Gooding, marketing director for the Farmers First company, said orders had been received throughout the UK.

"We are delighted so many people in rural and urban areas have decided to support British sheep producers by ordering our chilled lamb boxes. Many have been so impressed with the quality of the meat and the convenience of the service they have placed repeat orders."

One enthusiast for the campaign to promote British light lamb, supported by farmers weekly, is French-born Dorset dairy producer Liz Mitchell. "It is a brilliant idea. Why cant you do the same for calves?" asked Mrs Mitchell, who runs 210 mostly Holstein cows across 140ha (354 acres) at Manor Farm, Shroton Blandford, Dorset.

"I bought two whole lambs for the freezer and was so impressed I ordered 40lb of casserole lamb, ready diced, for the village harvest supper I organised at the beginning of September."

Another supporter of the light lamb offer is Suffolk arable grower John Baddeley. Speaking from his tractor cab while ploughing land for next years sugar beet crop at Abbots Hill Farm, Rickinghall, Diss, he said: "We were so impressed by the taste and service we received after ordering one whole lamb box, we ordered another. Weve also persuaded a non-farming friend to put an order in."
