26 killed on farms in six months

THERE were 26 fatal accidents on farms between March and September this year, according to provisional estimates from the Health and Safety Executive.

But a total of 48 people were killed over the year from April 1997 to March 1998, including 10 members of the public.

Niumbers of deaths in agriculture are second only to those in the construction and manufacturing industries.

The HSE now intends to publish half-yearly statistics in recognition of public interest in deaths occurring in the workplace.
