2900gns for Galloway

SUPERIOR types were the only cattle to meet a decent trade at the Galloway Cattle Societys spring fixture at Carlisle.

It was the Aug 1996-bred bull Nero of Dodgsontown from T V Blair and Son, Roadhead, Carlisle that took the male championship under local judge Mr Leslie Kennedy. This son of Park Nook Benny reached 2900gns with a successful call from J R F Pattinson, Hexham.

A stylish maiden heifer from the Waugh familys Kilnstown herd at Bewcastle took the female championship and made 480gns to D Jackson and Sons, Roadhead, Carlisle. The same price was paid for a non-pedigree maiden heifer from local vendor W Phillips, Longtown.

Leading bid for females was 750gns given for a non-pedigree cow suckling a heifer calf consigned by W E Charlton, Hexham.

AVERAGES: Two pedigree bulls £1722; six non-pedigree heifers and calves £341; five pedigree in-calf heifers £388; four pedigree bulling heifers £412; 22 non-pedigree bulling heifers £287; four non-pedigree cows and calves £585. (Harrison and Hetherington)
