433ha new spuds dug

DESPITE recent rain, clearings of new-season potatoes accelerated to 433ha (1070 acres) this week.

Cumulative yield by Wed,May 21 stood at just over16t/ha (6.5t/acre) which, atan average price of £313/t, gave growers a gross return of £5068/ha (£2051/acre).

Progress, meanwhile, continues apace on Jersey, where Monday saw the largest movement of the season at 1396t. Total exports from the island have reached 25,268t, compared with under 11,000t at the same time last year.
