‘A harvest to forget’
TREVOR HORSNELL, who farms on clay near Chelmsford in Essex, is about five days from finishing harvest; “Its a harvest to forget.”
First wheat crops have been averaging 9t/ha (3.6t/acre), while he expects yields up to 10t/ha. “Were not traditionally a high yielding farm, but yields are down. But Ive seen worse crops when combining for customers.”
He has grown Claire for biscuit wheat. “The quality looks pretty good, despite a few shrivelled grains when we dressed some for seed.”
Yields are down due to poor winter conditions. Drilling dates ranged from September to January for wheat, on the boulder clay soil. There was also some April drilled spring barley after root crops.
“Optic yielded 5t/ha (2t/acre), which is what we expected. It was drilled in wet conditions and then dried out.” quality is good. Nitrogen is 1.6% and the screenings are less than 3%.
