NEW pedigree herds looking for foundation females and commercial suckled calf producers mopping up the cheaper end produced a good trade for Aberdeen Angus females at Perth last weekend.
The unhaltered entry of just over 100 females was the largest at this regular fixture where prices reached 2000gns for a six-year-old cow – part of the first annual production sale from the Wedderlie herd owned by J and J Campbell, whose cattle run on the Lammermuir Hills in Berwickshire.
Wedderlie Ellana is by the 11,000gns 1993 Perth champion Lord Horatio P11 of Blelack and was offered with a five-month-old bull calf at foot by the Canadian sire HF Dreamstreet 21F.
Buyer was Scottish businessman Robert McNeil, who secured eight females for a total of £9240 for his Kincardine herd at Auchterarder, Perthshire.
There were two bids of 1800gns. A two-year-old Dreamstreet daughter from Wedderlie was sold suckling a newly-born bull calf by Tui Blackmark. Buyers were AR and PS Townsend (Farms), Kincardineshire. Another Wedderlie cow by Lord Horatio with a Dreamstreet calf at foot sold to FJ Fraser and Son, Forfar.
Wedderlie also drew 1700gns for a two-year heifer by Wedderlie Pridwell taken by leading breeders Neil Massie and Sons, Aberdeenshire.
James Arnott, Forfar, was an active bidder, claiming eight Wedderlie females for a total of £10,164. His highest was 1600gns for a Dreamstreet heifer.
A consignment of in-calf heifers from the Glenbervie herd at Stonehaven sold at 1200gns apiece, while a reduction from Lancashire breeder Roger Websters Lathom herd peaked twice at 1100gns. One of the Lathom bids came for a nine-year-old cow by QAS Traveler bred in the Moss herd.
Montrose-based PB Scanlan and Partners saw their Rosemount heifers sell to 1050gns for a daughter of Edwin V22 of Unigarth taken by Messrs Manning, Enochdhu (United Auctions). *
