Act against flies
TAKE action this month to avoid the larger than normal explosion in fly numbers predicted this summer, increasing the threat of New Forest Eye and mastitis.
There are large quantities of manure still lying around in heaps this summer. They are ideal breeding grounds for flies, warns Peter Bates of the Vet Lab Agency.
"Face, stable and horn flies have several breeding cycles a year. It is crucial that producers get on top of the first generation this month to minimise numbers left to breed later this year.
"To reduce fly numbers, frequently remove dung from buildings and ensure that it is kept dry and compacted during storage. Also try to keep spreading on fields to a minimum," he advises. *
