Agency probes BSE-in-milk risk

By FWi staff

THE risk of BSE being passed on to humans through cows milk is to be investigated by the Food Standards Agency.

Government scientists will test milk samples from BSE-infected cows as part of an FSA funded-study “in the next few weeks”, an agency spokeswoman said.

“There is no evidence that milk is contaminated,” she said, but researchers will look for the presence of prion proteins, widely believed to be the cause of BSE.

The spokeswoman said the study was part of a long-term programme of BSE-research being undertaken by the government.
