• A FORMER civil servant has been given the job of spearheading the revival of the pig industry. The National Pig Association has appointed former Cabinet Office official Stuart Royston as its new chief executive. Mr Royston, who lives in Hants, will take up the post on June 11. His appointment ends a long search for a replacement for Mike Sheldon who left last year.
• THE cost of bringing in the Army to help deal with foot-and-mouth has been estimated at £1.5m. In a written answer to a parliamentary question, Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean said although the money would fall initially to the defence budget the money would eventually be recovered from MAFF.
• NEW research suggests that drinking milk can help protect people against heart disease. A 25-year study of more than 57,000 Scottish men aged between 35 and 64, found heart disease was 8% lower among men who regularly drank milk. The research, conducted at Bristol University, also showed deaths from cancer and stroke to be 10% lower among milk drinkers. *
