AROUND THE SALES

BREEDING/STORE SHEEP: Last Fridays offering of over 11,000 head at Ingham, Suffolk, saw demand in the ewe section ease compared with the previous sale five weeks earlier. A three-quarters clearance was seen of the shearling ewes, which topped at £86.50. Among the breeders, strong younger sorts were especially sought after, making to £72 for Suffolk cross four-tooths. Grazing and cull ewes averaged £35.81. Store lambs were the easiest to sell, averaging £38.35, reports auctioneers Lacy Scott and Knight.

BEEF: Bank Holiday Monday saw a big drop in cattle marketings. In the case of steers, the drop was over a third on the previous week. This failed to support prices, however, which were marginally down at 101.29p/kg. Last Fridays EU intervention adjudication saw 327t and 972t of bull and steer beef accepted from GB traders.

LLANWENOG SHEEP: Bidding at the Societys annual show and sale last Saturday was opened, as it has been for the past 40 years, by Charles Evans of Evans Bros. The event at Llanybydder saw yearling ewes achieve a new record of 130gns, averaging 77gns. Ewe lambs made to 84gns. Supreme champion male went for 400gns, while rams and ram lambs averaged 121gns and 117gns respectively.
