BAYER PROMISES NEW HERBICIDE
BAYER PROMISES NEW HERBICIDE
BLACKGRASS and couch control is set for a boost with the imminent arrival of Bayers new herbicide MKH 6561, which was due to launched at Cereals 2001.
The new material is already being sold on the continent as Attribut and is expected to gain official approval for use here next spring.
MKH 6561 offers a new option for early spring clean-up of threatening grassweed infestations, including couch.
Until now, apart from pre-harvest glyphosate treatments, couch control in a standing crop has not been possible, says Bayer. In trials over five years the new material reduced seed heads by over 90% and rhizome growth by more than 75%.
In Lincolnshire last year naturally infested wheat yielded 2.2t/ha more where it had been sprayed in late April and again a month later than the untreated crop that suffered with 258 couch heads/sqm. The split dose treatments gave almost 100% control.
When used in suitable programmes MKH 6561 is also claimed to give good control of blackgrass and sterile brome, and useful suppression of wild oats, onion couch and loose silky bent.
