Beef exports to miss target

BRITISH beef exports are unlikely to recover to meet even the governments “disappointingly low” target, a cross-party group of MPs said last night.

The MAFF goal of recovering 10% of the pre-BSE beef trade by 2001 looks doomed because of the continuing French ban, according to members of the agriculture select committee.

The committee also criticised ministers for failing to stand up to Treasury in the spending round.

It was “far from reassured” that further programme cuts would not be required this year and that a further deterioration in the service provided by the ministry to consumers and producers would be “especially deplorable”.
