‘Below average yields’

MIKE MORRIS, who farms at Carisbrooke near Newport on the Isle of Wight, has had below average yields for wheat and peas.

Hereward winter wheat has yielded 6.4t/ha (2.6t/acre), which is below the 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre) average. But quality was good. The protein was 13.9%, Hagberg 290 and specific weight 77Kg/hl.

“There were bad bits in the field that knocked the average back. Because of the wet winter many bits of winter wheat were not planted.”

Peas have yielded 2.5-3t/ha (1-1.25t/acre). “Last year we averaged 5t/ha (2t/acre).”

They still have some spring barley and spring wheat to combine, which is not yet fit.
