Below average yields

DOUGLAS NIVEN, farming at Duns on the Scottish Borders, has had a good run in harvest due to good conditions in the last two weeks. He has finished spring barley and is halfway through wheat. "We’ve had a really good spell of weather."

Wheat yields have been variable, but better than expected. The average yield is 8.5-9t/ha (3.4-3.6t/acre). "The yields will be 0.5t/acre down on normal. This reflects the poor conditions they were drilled into at the back end of last year. We’ve got more set-a-side this year."

The varieties are Consort and Claire, with a little bit of Riband. Some of the crop will be biscuit wheat and some will be feed. Protein is about 10% and the Hagberg is between 230-250. "How much is going to be milling quality depends on the general quality of the Scottish crop.

Optic spring barley has not yielded as well, but quality is better, "it is about 0.5t/acre down on last year. But we’ve combined it below 20% and the nitrogen is between1.5-1.6%."
