Big and bold Jewel barley

SUFFOLK farmer Anthony Hogsbjerg started on Monday (23 July) on Jewel winter barley. A field of 8ha (20 acres) was cut. Today he has moved onto Vanessa.

He was very pleased with the Jewel, which yielded between 7.4-8t/ha. The Vanessa yielded at 6.8t/ha (2.75t/acre).

“I would have liked it to have been a bit more, but they are very big grains. I had to open up the concave to stop the grains from splitting.”

The Vanessa is being grown under malting contract.

He hopes to proceed well this week. From yesterday the moisture has dropped from 15% to 13%.

In total he has 90ha of barley and 60ha of wheat at the farm on medium sandy loam at Belchamp Water near Sudbury.
