Big threat from low input farms
LOW input farming poses a far greater threat to the environment than intensive farming systems which make optimum use of pesticides and biotechnology, according to a leading American scientist.
Indeed, UK government investment in lower input farming techniques was misguided and inappropriate, Dennis Avery, director of Global Food Resources at the Hudson Institute, Indianapolis, said at this weeks British Crop Protection Conference in Brighton.
"The biggest threat to bio-diversity is the ploughing down of much of the worlds remaining forests to produce low yielding crops and livestock," he said. *
