Blight risk warning
POTATO processor McCain has written to contract growers warning of tuber blight risk in store.
Growers are advised not to lift crops with immature skin set and not to harvest Shepody, Russet Burbank, or Yukon Gold varieties until at least five weeks after burning down with acid.
"Ideally, positively ventilate all stocks after harvest. If tuber blight or soft rots are seen at harvest, these stocks must be ventilated immediately," says Robert Scott, senior agronomist. He advises growers without letter-box ventilation systems to consider investing in the flexible Wedderspoon Tent or Pirie Aspire systems. *
