Border HFs confound the pessimists
A LIVELY trade surprised those making gloomy forecasts for the Border Counties Holstein Friesian Breeders Club evening bull sale at Carlisle where prices peaked at 5000gns.
Leading the field was William Armours Annandale Dancing Brave, a son of Brownfold Janro and out of Annandale Gina – the highest yielding heifer in Scotland in 1991 and the highest yielding cow in 1996 with a yield of 15,301kg. Buyer was P M W Jackson, Penrith.
William and Eileen Bells Marshside herd of pure British Friesians, run at Kirkbride, Carlisle always produce a wagon-load of entries for discerning buyers at this sale.
Their top was 4500gns for Marshide Charity 2nd, by Dounside Avenger and out of a Marshide Performer fourth calver from the Cutie family with three lactations at over 9000kg. He heads for Kilmarnock with J Drummond.
The Bells five bulls achieved the sales highest average of £3613.
Their Marshside Conductor 4th, by Oakridge Lawman and out of a 10,000kg dam from the Cutie family drew a bid of 4200gns from Ms Roberts, Cockermouth, Cumbria.
Overall average: 60 head £1572 (Harrison and Hetherington)
