British beef back to school

THE LEADER of the last council in England to exclude British beef from its school menus has pledged to put it back on pupils‘ plates.

In a BBC interview, Roger Blackmore, leader of Leicester City Council, said he believed there was no beef safer than British.

He added that he would be speaking to caterers supplying schools in the city to return British beef to their menus after an absence of more than eight years.

Tony Goodger, Meat and Livestock Commission foodservice manager, said it was excellent news that Mr Blackmore had given the industry such unqualified support, even though safety concerns surrounding British beef “faded many years ago”.

“Leicester City was the very last council where pupils could not get British beef for lunch. Now they will have the chance to eat it again,” Mr Goodger said.
