Brown confirms 4bn BSE bill
By FWi staff
The BSE crisis will have cost a total of 3.7 billion by March 2002, agriculture minister Nick Brown is reported as having confirmed by The Express.
Mr Brown told MPs during Commons questions that the European Union had contributed a further 487m in BSE-related aid to Britain, reports the paper.
The 4.2bn bill provoked what it describes as a “scathing attack” by Labour MP Dennis Skinner, who blamed the Tories for the BSE crisis.
Mr Brown said that people should wait for the Lord Phillips report on the BSE Inquiry before apportioning blame. The report is due in September.
