BSE cases fall by 22%


THE number of cases of BSE (mad cow disease) fell by 22% in the first half of this year, compared with same period in 1997.

Figures from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food also show BSE fell by 65% compared with the same period in 1996.

The ministrys BSE Progress Report, published at six-monthly intervals, showed that by August 7, the number of confirmed cases of BSE this year totalled 1280.

The cumulative total for 1997 was 4311. The cumulative total for 1996 was 8016.
