TIGHTENING arable margins will encourage more growers to turn to minimal cultivation, says Vaderstad.
The Scandinavian firms Lars Hannell reckons the 85% of UK arable land currently ploughed is certain to drop. So, seed drills will have to cope with planting into "trashier" seed-beds.
Designed to meet this demand, Vaderstad has introduced an all-disc option for its Rapid drill, with the two standard rows of rigid tines at the front of the unit replaced by twin banks of concave discs.
These front discs are spaced at similar intervals to the rear seeding coulters, and incorporate turnbuckle adjustment for increased penetration.
Their main task is to cut and bury – hence their concave profile. Price of the disc option for a 6m (20ft) wide Rapid is £5990, about £1700 more than the standard rigid tine system.
That figure is then added to the price of the base drill (£42,180) to get a final total. *
