Buyers called by West

WEST Country dairy sales have been drawing buyers from far afield to produce some useful trading.

At the dispersal of the milking and in-calf heifer portions of David and Joyce Stephenss Hayhill herd of Holstein Friesians at Wells, Somerset, bidding reached 1700gns.

This was paid for a United Nick sired in-calf heifer. She joins David and Valerie Normans Ciderhouse herd at Frome along with her twin sister at 1280gns.

A guest consignment from Terry and Shayne Coxs Holmead herd drew the days top call of 2500gns for the third calver Holmead Starbuck Monogram. Buyers were Aston Pedigree Farms, Cornwall for their Wilcove herd.

They also took Watergate Sultan Rosetta at 2000gns and Holmead Clyde Holly 10th at 1800gns. The 42 Hayhill cows averaged £770 and leading average for Holmead was £1538 for six in-calf cows.

The high-yielding Coldridge herd of Crediton farmer D W C Beer staged its 23rd home sale where prices peaked at 1580gns for the heifer Coldridge Tonic Monogram taken by T Green, Gloucester. The 43 calved heifers and eight heifer calves averaged £1050 with 10 in-milk cows levelling at £1011. (Greenslade Taylor Hunt)n
