Campaign to run on sheep welfare

WELFARE of lambs fattened on roots and arable by-products is be the focus of a MAFF and ADAS sheep welfare campaign aimed at helping to overcome increasing public concern.

Acknowledging that most finished lamb producers are managing their sheep correctly, ADAS sheep specialist Alison Lockwood says the campaign will help combat increasing public complaints.

"The public see sheep on roots and complain they are not being looked after. For the most part, its because they perceive they are being poorly cared for, but there are some genuine welfare concerns."

Among these are lack of water and run-back areas, she says.

High welfare standards, besides reducing public concern and involvement, will ensure good flock health, giving better performance, fewer growth checks and earlier marketing.

Producers can discuss welfare with ADAS sheep specialists at several markets and on farm. Details are available on 01552-535151.
