Cattle move from Scottish infected area
By FWi staff
ABOUT 270 cattle were expected to move to Ayr abattoir this week from the foot-and-mouth-infected area of Dumfries and Galloway.
This is the first time in Scotland that animals have been allowed out of the infected area for slaughter since mid-February.
From next week, stock from the infected area will be switched from Ayr to the abattoir in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, which will be the only dedicated plant available outside Dumfries and Galloway.
Ayrshire falls in the “At Risk” area of Scotland.
There is still no indication of when cattle might move to the main slaughterhouses in Aberdeenshire, which is in the “Provisionally Free” area.
