Chase lost income

DAIRY farmers are being urged to complete a pro-forma letter notifying the Treasury and the Competition Commission of their likely intention to pursue a claim for lost milk income.

The letter, which is available through local NFU branches, is the latest development in investigations by Lancs dairy farmer Bill Uttley who believes dairy farmers have a legal right to claim against the government.

Some months ago Mr Uttley, of Heywood, instructed a leading firm of agricultural solicitors to determine whether dairy farmers had a case to claim for excessive interference in the selling of milk following the demise of Milk Marque.

"We have just had some very encouraging news that has indicated which legal route we should take.

"The next few weeks will hopefully see some very significant developments that could mean dairy farmers will at last be able to claim some compensation for the massive losses incurred from the low milk price and devaluation of quota and cows," says Mr Uttley. &#42
