Cheap car tax for rural drivers?

CHANCELLOR Gordon Brown plans to offer motorists in remote areas discounts of 110 on car tax, reports The Daily Telegraph.

He hopes this will avert another protest when a 60-day deadline set by farmer and haulier fuel protesters expires, says the newspaper.

While Mr Brown has said he will not cut fuel tax, this would bring some relief to rural motorists, whose fuel may cost more 20p more a litre than in towns.

Areas covered could include the Highlands and mid-Wales, where motorists would pay 45 instead of 155 for cars over 1200cc.
