Check shearer has a licence
SHEARING licences are still with us and producers should check their shearing contractor is licensed before allowing him near their sheep this season, warns the National Association of Agricultural contractors.
NAAC executive officer Jill Hewitt reports widespread uncertainty among contractors about whether they need a licence to shear. "Contractors and producers employing them could be prosecuted when the contractor is not licensed."
Contractors holding green shearing licences from last year will be able to use these again. But if they want to take advantage of the slightly more relaxed conditions of this years green licences – such as being able to take a sheep dog on-farm – they will need to reapply, says Mrs Hewitt.
"Also, all shearers holding a red licence last year must reapply." Shearers requiring a new licence should contact the MLC (01908-844790). *
