Confident bids for dairy cows
THE 1000gns commercial dairy cow is back.
Milk producers bidding for stock in Cumbria showed a renewed confidence taking 15 animals to 900gns and above when high index, non-pedigree Holstein Friesians were offered by G A C Shipley and Partners.
Their cattle had been moved from Driffield, East Yorks, to The Sale Centre, Penrith, and drew the highest bids from buyers seeking impressive PIN figures.
Top price was paid for a Delta Cleitus Jabot daughter with a PIN of +£113 – the highest of any cow in the sale. This freshly-calved young cow was giving 41kg a day and was bought for 1100gns by * G Gibb and Sons, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
The highest PIN figure in the sale, at +£115, had been achieved by a two-month-old calf by Mascot. She made 400gns to R C Gemmell, Dumfries.
Jabot daughters were a feature of the trade with 14 milkers levelling at £913 and five in-calf heifers at £844. Major buyers were Messrs Broxa Farms, Scarborough, who bought 45 animals and the Cocklepark herd at Newcastle University secured 22 head of youngstock.
Auctioneer Tom Brooksbank said: "This was a much improved trade with commercial milk producers competing strongly for freshly-calved high index cattle to levels we have not seen for some time."
Averages: 164 cows and calved heifers £724; nine served heifers £808 and 35 maiden heifers £330. (Norton and Brooksbank) *
