CONSERVATION of endangered species is to become a statutory duty of all government and local government bodies, reports The Daily Telegraph.
This was agreed on Monday (16 October) night on the last day of the committee stage of the Countryside and Rights of Way Bill.
Whips had warned that the Government faced defeat if it did not accept the Tory amendment.
Lord Whitty, for the Government, agreed to introduce a an amendment giving biodiversity action plans for 400 endangered and declining species, including farmland birds.
This means the Ministry of Agriculture will have to take greater notice of its conservation duties.
Endangered species found outside special sites of special scientific interest will receive protection.
