County farms — do they have a part to play in a modern world?

CHESHIRE County Council runs an agricltural estate of some 5500ha with
approximately 120 tenant farmers.

The aim of the estate is to provide an access route into farming coupled with good farming practice.

The estate is constantly under review and is being rationalised to produce an estate with farms from 30 to 80 ha.( approximate size depending on opportunity).

It has been suggested that we sell the estate and use our capital
reciept in some other way. Some counties have done this already. Should
Cheshire follow this route?

Do we need local authorities to be in this field as we go into the next century?
