Crop concerns boost barley demand

HIGH-QUALITY barley is in demand, driven by concern over the Scottish crop and those in other parts of Europe, reports Robert Kerr of Glencore Grain.

“Maltsters, who have been pretty cool about the crop, are now looking to buy at a sensible premium. Good samples of 1.65% nitrogen Chariot and Optic are worth about 90/t.”

Winter varieties seem oversupplied – there is quality in abundance and many minor varieties will head to intervention, says Mr Kerr.

Main demand is for Regina – it was valued midweek at 75/t ex-farm. Such prices may not last – the variety makes up 25% of the crop in store this year, Mr Kerr points out.
