Deadline looming

PIG and poultry farmers considering expanding their operations could save thousands of £s by submitting plans to their local authority by the end this month.

The DETRs new Integrated Pollution, Prevention and Control regulation will apply to new poultry units with more than 40,000 places, and pig buildings with space for more than 750 sows or 2000 fattening pigs (above 30kg), says the union. But poultry farmers beating the Oct 31 deadline will escape charges until 2003, pig farmers a year later. But building work must be completed by Oct 31, 2000. &#42
