Diesel ups the oomph

SIX-CYLINDER enthusiasts may have to review their opinion of four cylinder engines, if Perkins description of its new diesel engine is to be believed.

The 1004-40TA, says the company, provides six-cylinder low-speed pulling performance from a four-cylinder engine.

Rated at 115hp at 2200rpm the, turbo-charged and intercooled unit is claimed to offer impressively high torque at low engine speeds.

For the technically informed torque and power characteristics of the 1004-40TA reveal a 23% torque back up and maximum torque of 459Nm at 1400 rpm.

Predictably, the unit is fully stage 1 compliant with worldwide off highway emissions legislation and, says Perkins, is 3dBA quieter than its predecessor.

&#8226 Perkins, owned by Caterpillar, produces in excess of 300,000 engines a year. They are used by more than 1000 equipment manufacturers in the agricultural, construction industries and also for many other off-road applications.
