THE Government is to force farmers to take out insurance to cover future outbreaks of foot-and-mouth and other animal diseases, reports The Sunday Telegraph.
It says a Ministry of Agriculture report to be published next month will conclude that the industry must pick up the bill for compensating farmers for loss of business.
Producers would need to contribute an average of 500 to the scheme intended to compensation for loss of business due to bans on animal movements and costs of rebuilding business.
The newspaper says the Government intends to continue funding compensation for the compulsory slaughter of herds infected by diseases such as foot-and -mouth disease.
The Sunday Telegraph says details of the compulsory insurance scheme will be included in a report from the Governments Working Party to Review the Commercial Impact of Animal Disease.
