DIY shear needs careful planning

WHEN self-shearing sheep, without the luxury of contractors, preparation is crucial to ensure adequate health and safety, says MLC sheep scientist Jenny Anderson.

"It is essential to use a circuit breaker when shearing, as people have been killed by electricity leaking into the machine," says Dr Anderson.

Preparation is also important. Setting up handling facilities, pre-grouping sheep by wool type and crutching/dagging dirty animals will help the process run smoothly.

Everything must be close to hand so that shearers energy is not wasted, she adds. "Make sure there are enough adults, not children, to help catch sheep and roll wool. Try not to rush the job; upset and heated people waste energy."

When shearing, wear appropriate clothing, take regular breaks and drink plenty. "Eating crisps will also help replenish salt levels, preventing cramp. Try to exercise for a few weeks before shearing – it will make the job easier." &#42
