Early-drilled wheat yield pleases
HARVEST is about half-way through for Nick Huxtable, manager for Sir Richard Hyde Parker Farms at Long Melford in Suffolk.
With winter wheat drilling stopped on 12 October before too much rain, yields have pleasing. Savannah has yielded 9.5-10t/ha (3.8-4t/acre) and Malacca has yielded 8.75-9t/ha (3.5-3.6t/acre). These are slightly above average.
“We only had one disastrous field, which had water standing in parts of it for much of the year.”
Quality of the Malacca has also been a concern, “I really wanted to harvest it two weeks before, but we were stopped by rain. But I dont think it has harmed it too much.
They are halfway through harvesting 730ha (1800 acres) of combinable crops on the farm, with mostly clay soil. 240ha (600 acres) of winter wheat were not drilled and is now set-aside.
Apex oilseed rape was disappointing, yielding under 2.5t/ha (1t/acre). He says spring barley will be ready in September.
