Entries approach the 700 mark

THE Irish National Ploughing Championships take place at Birr, Co Offaly on Sept 30 and Oct 1-2.

As in previous years, the championships site is also the venue for Irelands largest agricultural machinery event which annually reveals all that is new in the Irish farming scene.

That is not to say that such an exhibition holds little interest for UK visitors – far from it. Those with the merest smattering of machinery knowledge will know that Irish manufacturers are responsible for a significant volume of machinery seen in the UK and beyond.

Company entries for this years event held, on a 20ha (50-acre) site, are reported by the organisers to be approaching the 700 mark. One of the main attractions, they insist, could be a science, technology and innovation road show which is also being staged throughout the country to cover national awareness of the most important technology advances of theday.

And for those still looking for other attractions, the event will also be staging sheepdog trials, and a host of other social entertainment – much of it in Irish tradition – "craec agus ceol".

Birr, Co Offaly, is this years venue for the Irish National Ploughing Championships and agricultural machinery show.
