EU scientists’ boost to UK veal

EUROPEAN scientists have ruled that it is safe to resume imports of British veal-on-the-bone, banned at the height of the BSE crisis, reports the Financial Times.

This move was welcomed by the National Farmers Union, which said although the sector was tiny, the news was a boost for the beef export industry.

The decision was also an acknowledgement of UK control measures to eradicate BSE, said the NFU.

The European Scientific Steering Committees ruling – which applies to animals under the date-based export scheme – will now be considered by the European Commission.
