EURO-BRIEFS

&#8226 MEMBER states are suffering from a major shortage of disposal capacity for meat and bonemeal, following this years EU-wide ban on the raw material. According to food safety commissioner, David Bryne, there is a 46% deficit in incineration capacity, which is raising the threat of poor disposal, illegal feed use and possible export.

&#8226 GERMANY is poised to outlaw battery cages in egg production next year, going beyond EU requirements. The new rules will ban conventional cages within five years and EU-approved "enriched cages" from 2012. Green farm minister, Renate Kunast, described the move as a "small step for hens, but a giant step for animal welfare".

&#8226 FARM ministers have mandated the commission to negotiate on behalf of all 15 member states towards a new convention on animal welfare during international transport. The existing convention, which is due to be renewed next year, will set tighter rules for all European countries in the light of new scientific knowledge and practical experience. &#42
