European consumers turn to NZ venison
By FWi staff
UNPRECEDENTED prices are being paid for New Zealand venison as Europeans seek alternatives to beef and lamb, reports the Financial Times.
Worries over BSE and foot-and-mouth outbreaks are causing consumers, particularly those on the Continent, to look for exotic alternatives.
The newspaper says that many New Zealand farmers wish they could produce crocodile, kangaroo and ostrich meat, as their prices are also soaring.
Farmgate venison prices are running NZ$7.20-7.60/kg (2.06-2.17/kg), some 10% higher than the previous peak in 1996.
