Experts predict GM meat in 10 years

By FWi staff

SHOPPERS will be buying meat from genetically modified animals within 10 years, predict leading scientists.

A report by the Royal Society says that livestock engineered with disease resistance could offer major benefits, reports the Daily Mail.

Professor Ian McConnell, a veterinary scientist from Cambridge University, said pork from pigs with cow genes could be among the first on the shelves.

Pigs have been modified to have an antimicrobial protein in their milk, reducing the incidence of gastro-intestinal disease, reports the newspaper.

Before meat from these animals could be sold it would need to be licensed, and Prof McConnell predicts its sale is still ten years away.

The Royal Society report predicts that GM meat will be as controversial as GM crops.
