Farmer must pay over £100,000 to burglar

FARMER Stanley Wiles lost an appeal against an earlier court ruling that he should compensate burglar Malcolm Phillips whom he caught stealing tiles from his piggery.

Wiles, of The Magazine, near Selby, North Yorkshire, kicked the burglar after he caught him in the act on 18 January 1991. Phillips sustained damage to his face and a fractured skull.

Wiles was cleared of a charge of causing grievous bodily harm at York Crown Court in 1992, but Phillips launched a claim for compensation. Wiles now faces paying costs estimated at £100,000 and compensation which has yet to be fixed.
