Finishing on spring wheat
DAVID STEED, who farms at Manston, near Margate in Kent, is finishing harvest today by combining some spring wheat.
“Well be lucky if it makes 3.5t/acre (8.6t/ha).” The April drilled crop was grown because winter wheat could not be drilled in poor conditions.
Equinox winter wheat for feed has yielded 10t/ha (4t/acre). “This was drilled in January and was only one foot high. But it is a good sample with bold grains.” Marshall feed wheat also yielded 10t/ha (4t/acre).
“The weather has been catchy recently, but Ive waited for it to dry and cut nothing above 15.5%. Today it is 14.8%.”
“The wheat harvest is better than expected after the poor oilseed rape harvest.”
